Many of us have been driving since the age of 16, but do we even know how to solve some of the most basic auto repair issues?
If you drive a Mercedes Maybach or a Tesla, where the scope of repair might be more complicated, then any lack of mechanical knowledge is forgivable. Take Tesla, for example. The electric car company recommends that vehicle owners take all auto repair issues to a designated Tesla repair center. If you decide to take a crack at it yourself, you might find it next to impossible to source the necessary parts, or even a manual. The good news is that if you're in the majority, that is, an owner of a gas-powered vehicle, then you can (and should be able to) do a lot of the simple stuff yourself. Of course, you should also have a reliable, local auto Mechanic that can address all your more serious auto repair concerns. DIY Auto Repair Jobs
Remove scratches from vehicle body:
Scratches are a nuisance and can really ruin the aesthetic of a car. To improve your vehicle's resale value and general appearance, you can repair this issue within the span of an afternoon. The first step is to rinse off the scratched area of your car. Next, sand down the scratch and remove the top layer of paint. Any sandpaper or sanding block will do, but it's important to ensure that you're sanding in the direction of the scratch. Sanding against the grain can cause more scratches and add further damage to the body. Next, wipe off any excess debris and ensure the surface is smooth before moving on to priming. As for paint, choose a close match and apply at least two coats. To get an exact colour match, you can check with the car manufacturer. Finish the job with a clear coat, which protects the paint and gives it a nice shine. Replace wipers: Windshield wipers are an important but often overlooked aspect of general car maintenance for the average person. Imagine driving in a rainstorm or heavy snowfall when your wipers suddenly stop working. You'd be stuck. As a vehicle owner, you should get into the habit of replacing windshield wipers from summer to winter on a yearly basis. Such a simple auto repair procedure can give you peace of mind that your wipers won't fall off or break at the most inconvenient time. Change a flat tire: For those of us who don't know how to change a flat, what would happen in the event that CAA is out of cell range? You owe it to yourself to learn this surprisingly uncomplicated step in auto repair. It also helps that you have the necessary tools in your trunk, such as a wrench, a jack stand, and of course, the spare tire. First, you'll need to loosen the lug nuts. Next, raise your car off the ground using the jack stand, and remove the lug nuts as well as the old tire. Then put the new tire on, followed by the lug nuts. Lower the car to the ground. And you're done! Once home, you can get your auto mechanic in Markham to ensure you did a great job, and that all your other tires are in fine shape. Change brake pads: Now that you're well versed in the art of changing a flat, switching your old brake pads to new ones should be a breeze. The procedure is quite similar and goes as follows: loosen the lug nuts, raise the car off the ground using the jack, remove the worn brake pads and add the new ones. Finally, lower the car back to the ground. Change oil: The engine, essentially the heart and lungs of a vehicle, relies on regular oil changes to run smoothly and to ensure a long lifespan. It's one of the first lessons in auto repair that we learn, but we get lazy. Remember, changing the oil will also increase gas mileage and prevent bigger issues from developing. First you must drain the old oil, which you can do by locating the drain plug, unscrewing it and placing a bucket or container underneath. Then replace the oil filter located in the engine bay and add new oil. AUTO MECHANIC MARKHAM – AUTO GENICS
